Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party, Nara Lokesh clash over student fee reimbursement dues

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has raised strong objections to the coalition government’s handling of the education sector, alleging that students are suffering due to stalled welfare schemes. Speaking to the media on Monday, YSRCP spokesperson Jupudi Prabhakar Rao demanded the immediate clearance of pending fee reimbursement dues, which have left students unable to retrieve their certificates from college managements.
Rao blamed the coalition government for halting welfare payments under the pretext of the election code, leaving students in distress. He pointed out that the dues accumulated during the Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) 2014-19 tenure, amounting to Rs 2,800 crore, were cleared by the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government after taking office in 2019.
Highlighting YSRCP’s focus on education, Rao noted that the previous government spent Rs 73,000 crore on education, including Rs 17,000 crore on Vidya Deevena and Vidya Vasathi schemes. “The Jagan government brought revolutionary changes in the education sector, such as introducing English medium education, which has now been halted by the coalition government,” he added.
Rao accused the current administration of vindictive politics under Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership, saying it is undermining critical reforms introduced by the previous government. He also pointed out that from 2019 to 2024, Rs 12,609 crore was reimbursed for fees and Rs 26,067 crore was directly deposited under the Amma Vodi scheme, benefitting 44.49 lakh mothers across the state.
YSRCP student wing president Ravichandra also called for the immediate reimbursement of fees. “The education sector is reeling under the coalition government. The pending payments must be cleared without delay to relieve students and ensure their futures are not jeopardized,” he said.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Education Minister Nara Lokesh accused the previous YSRCP government of burdening the state with Rs 6,500 crore in dues, affecting students and the education sector. He alleged that arrears under schemes like Vidya Deevena and Vasathi Deevena, as well as unpaid reimbursements to colleges, jeopardised students’ futures.
Responding sharply to former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s statements on X, Lokesh criticised the previous administration’s “waste governance”, claiming it failed to fulfil promises of fee reimbursement. Lokesh said lakhs of students were left without certificates because of unpaid dues, he assured that the TDP-led government resolved the issue and directed colleges to issue certificates promptly.
